This story is about Frannie, a sixth grade student who goes to a school "on the other side of the highway." She has to deal with some serious issues ranging from always feeling like the "new kid", on the defensive about her older brother who is deaf, the fear of her mother losing another baby, and her day to day tumultuous relationships with students at her school. Although her friends and acquaintances at the school can act pretty rough, a mysterious new kid comes to the school. At first this young white boy is greeted with teasing and serious judgement being dubbed "the Jesus Boy, he ends up having a calming effect to the others, causing them to take a step back and take a look at themselves, their beliefs and their character.
